
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) celebrated the devotion of the agency's staff members at the third annual Distinguished Staff Awards, recognizing exceptional achievements and contributions that have significantly enhanced emergency preparedness, hazard mitigation, disaster response and recovery across Texas.
“The Distinguished Staff Awards represent more than recognition— they embody the very spirit of TDEM,” said Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. “Every day, our mission demands courage, ingenuity, and an unwavering dedication to serve Texans in their greatest time of need. We honor this dedication of those who have not only answered the call but have exceeded expectations and inspire us to reach higher.”
The honorees were recognized at the agency's holiday party on December 5, which included the presentation of awards to several outstanding team members who have gone above and beyond in their roles, demonstrating teamwork, leadership, collaboration, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
This year’s honorees include:
Newcomer Award – Ashley Castillo: Recovery Specialist
Recognizes a new employee (between 1 and 3 years at TDEM) who has made individual significant contributions and showcases creative ideas.
Innovator Award – Melissa Ruiz: Unit Chief, Plans
Recognizes an individual who exceeds their daily job duties, leads by example, and provides innovative ideas.
Spotlight Award – Anne Lehnick: Unit Chief, Hazard Mitigation and Hans Bowar: Unit Chief, IT Enterprise Helpdesk
Recognizes an individual’s commitment to TDEM as someone who has significantly increased productivity & efficiency.
Heart of TDEM Award – Samantha Fabian: State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry Program Manager
Recognizes an individual’s donation of time as someone who advocates in their community in support of TDEM's mission.
Chief Award – John Honoré: Section Chief, Meteorology and Juan Acuña: Unit Chief, Meteorology
Recognizes service to the agency and to the State of Texas that goes above and beyond required duties.
