The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) announced today that applications are now open for the sixth cadet class of the Texas Emergency Management Academy.
Cadet Class 6 will begin its 8-month journey in August in Fort Worth, as part of the first-of-its-kind program in the nation operated by TDEM. The Academy comprehensively trains the next generation of the emergency management workforce in all phases of emergency management, including preparedness, response, recovery, and hazard mitigation. Graduation is scheduled for Spring 2027.
“Texas depends on a highly trained, highly capable emergency management workforce, and The Academy continues to build exactly that,” said Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. “Each new cadet class brings fresh talent and strengthens our capabilities as a state. We look forward to welcoming the next group of future leaders into this program.”
This year, TDEM is placing a renewed emphasis on recruiting applicants from local and state government agencies, including county emergency management offices, municipal departments, public health entities, regional councils of government, and state-level emergency response partners.
“Cadet Class 6 represents an incredible opportunity for those seeking a career with real impact,” said TDEM’s Training Division Chief Kade Long. “The Academy provides the skills, experience, and confidence needed to support communities before, during, and after disasters. We encourage motivated applicants from across Texas, the nation, and the world to apply and take this next step.”
Now preparing for its sixth cohort, the Academy offers approximately 1,300–1,400 hours of training. Since its inception, hundreds of applicants from across the nation and internationally have sought admission into the program, with graduates now serving in critical emergency management roles across Texas and beyond.
Successful graduates of the Texas Emergency Management Academy ascertain comprehensive knowledge of Texas emergency management law, planning, disaster finance, resource staging, incident management, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) response management, hazard mitigation, risk assessments, disaster recovery, operations technology, volunteer management, wildland firefighting, public information, private-sector coordination, and other key components of the emergency management discipline.
Cadets also complete nationally recognized emergency management certifications, including:
In addition, graduates of the Academy leave as certified basic Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and achieve National Registry Certification upon successful completion.
Throughout the curriculum, subject matter experts provide in-depth, hands-on instruction through a combination of field exercises, scenario-based training, advanced emergency management technology, and classroom learning designed to equip cadets with the highest level of professional education in the field.
