Texas Emergency Management Academy Cadets Participate in Capstone Exercise Ahead of Graduation

The Texas Emergency Management Academy cadets are participating in a multi-day disaster scenario as part of the program’s capstone course ahead of graduation.

"The Academy is a groundbreaking program affording trainees the opportunity to build practical skills in the emergency management discipline,” said Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. “This week’s capstone exercise takes what cadets learned over the past 8 months and tests it by offering realistic disaster scenarios.”

The capstone exercise takes place at the TEEX Emergency Operations Training Center in College Station, a world-class training facility where responders from around the globe hone their skills. Cadets assume roles within an Emergency Operations Center and engage in realistic disaster response scenarios. The exercise is divided into multiple operational periods and offers cadets the opportunity to rotate through different roles and build confidence and competency in handling the various phases of a disaster.

“We tested this group of extraordinary cadets by facing them with challenging disaster scenarios,” said Training Division Chief Kade Long, who leads The Academy’s development and curriculum. “This exercise guides cadets through all phases of a disaster, helping to prepare them for careers in emergency management through hands-on practical education."

Successful graduates of The Texas Emergency Management Academy ascertain comprehensive knowledge of Texas emergency management law, planning, disaster finance, resource staging, incident management, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) response management, hazard mitigation, risk assessments, disaster recovery, resource requests, operations technology, volunteer management, public information, private sector partnerships, and other key aspects of emergency management. Graduates of The Academy earn multiple nationally recognized emergency management certifications such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Professional Development Series, Level I Professional Continuity Practitioner program, and the National Emergency Management Basic Academy (NEMBA). Graduates also leave The Academy as certified basic emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and achieve National Registry Certification upon successful completion.

Graduation is scheduled for later this week.
