TDEM Urges Texans to Proactively Prepare Ahead of Hurricane Season
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) hosted a hurricane tabletop exercise today as the agency prepares for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
This annual hurricane exercise is planned for months by experts in the emergency preparedness field and hosted by TDEM, with the support and participation of state and federal partners including the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the National Weather Service.
This year’s exercise took place at TDEM’s regional headquarters and emergency operations center in College Station, bringing together TDEM staff throughout the state’s eight regions as well as member agencies from the Texas Emergency Management Council to strengthen coordinated preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
The exercise scenario was designed to help personnel gain deeper insight into the unique considerations required for managing an emergency that coincides with the occurrence of a high-profile event, such as the FIFA World Cup taking place in North American cities in 2026, including Texas cities.
“We appreciate the dedication and collaboration of our regional teams and partners who participated in this critical exercise,” said Chief Nim Kidd. “While state agencies, local governments, and our partners across Texas communities develop, review, and test vital plans to enhance our collective preparedness capabilities, Texans are encouraged to start preparing now for the potential impacts of the incoming hurricane season.”
As preparedness efforts for hurricane season continue at the state level, TDEM will conduct additional exercise simulations at the Texas State Emergency Operations Center to evaluate and strengthen our state’s capabilities ahead of the next big storm.
“The state’s annual hurricane exercise requires enormous collaboration and efficient communication between emergency management partners,” said James Elliott, Preparedness Division Chief at TDEM. “With hurricane season around the corner, we continue to plan and prepare, urging Texans to make personal preparedness a priority and plan ahead.”
TDEM reminds Texans to stay informed, follow instructions from local officials, monitor weather forecasts, make an emergency plan, pack an emergency supply kit, review hurricane evacuation routes, and consider reviewing flood risk and insurance coverage.
2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.
