Governor Abbott Deploys Additional Resources To Support New Mexico Wildfire, Flash Flood Response

Governor Greg Abbott today deployed additional Texas emergency management resources to New Mexico to assist in the response efforts for the ongoing wildfires that are impacting the state, as well as the flashflood threat from heavy rainfall, following a request from New Mexico’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

“Texas will continue to aid our neighbors in New Mexico as they deal with devastating wildfires and potential flash flooding,” said Governor Abbott. “Today, I deployed additional resources to assist New Mexico in their efforts to protect their communities that may be impacted. When neighbors help neighbors, America is stronger. I thank our first responders and emergency management personnel who are working around the clock to support their fellow Americans."

At the direction of Governor Abbott, the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) deployed additional state emergency response resources to support New Mexico’s wildfire and flood response operations, including:

  • Texas Division of Emergency Management: Personnel from the State of Texas Incident Management Team to assist the State of New Mexico’s Emergency Operations Center with response operations, logistics, and planning
  • Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1): Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads to assist with flood rescues

The activation of additional Texas emergency response resources comes after the Governor directed TDEM to deploy resources last week to assist New Mexico officials in their response to ongoing wildfires.

This deployment of resources is coordinated under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). The EMAC is a state-to-state mutual aid system that enables states to provide assistance and share resources with another state in response to a disaster or emergency. EMAC members can share resources from all disciplines, protect personnel who deploy, and be reimbursed for mission-related costs. For more information, visit emacweb.org.

Additionally, state emergency response resources remain activated across Southeast Texas in support of local flood response operations.
